As refined as it is wild. . . as beautiful as it is brutish.
"Belle brute" is the term artist Kristine Kubat uses to refer to her unique style of brush paintings and colored pencil drawings.
Kristine Kubat is a self-taught draftsman, painter and ceramicist born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and living in Hilo, Hawaii since 1980. “Belle Brute” is the term she uses to describe her unique style of abstract paintings. . . a style that strikes a balance between elements savage and refined.
Kubat's interest in art began at an early age, and over the course of her 58-year life she has amassed an archive of work that mirrors her love for a broad spectrum of styles, including strict representations as well as highly original abstractions. No matter which end of the aesthetic divide a particular piece ends up on, all of Kubat’s work is grounded in a classical devotion to rendering, best exemplified by her precise figure drawings and botanical paintings.
Complimenting these fine art endeavors, is a collection of fabric designs, incorporating painted motifs and torn recycled paper.
While Kubat has generally eschewed opportunities to sell or show her work, as she approaches her sixth decade as an artist, she feels ready to share her creations. Her foray into juried competition garnered first place at the biennial 2014 Abstract Only! show in Hilo, Hawaii for her oil/acrylic on canvas painting titled “Oliver and Lola.”
